While Bombay Velvet helmed by Anurag Kashyap didn’t do as well as it was expected to, at that time high expectations were riding on it. While Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma went on to play the lead roles, initially it was Ranveer Singh who was supposed to do it and had even memorised the lines.

However, due to budgetary concerns at that time, Ranveer Singh was still fairly new and not the superstar that he is today and hence was dropped from the film. Anurag Kashyap was quoted on a leading entertainment portal stating, “He (Ranveer) wanted to do Bombay Velvet. He had even memorised all the dialogues. I tried very hard. I tried so hard that I even postponed the shoot of Bombay Velvet and shot Ugly, hoping things would get right at that time because Ranveer also, at that time, started doing Lootera. So I waited.”

He then concluded by saying he has tried reaching out to Ranveer but the director has his guilt too. However, he has complimented the actor on his brilliant portrayal in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani.
